Winner Take Nothing

Pushing against the edges
of lives intertwined as spokes of a wheel.
Bumping against our differences.
Intolerable friction.
Us against Them.
Man’s inhumanity to man severs the
bonds of brotherhood.
Thing is,
everyone thinks they are the good guy.
as the fabric of civilization is ripped by intolerant hands.
The soon-to-be dead pray to a god of destruction.
So many undone.
What is brutal survives,
stamping out the weak.
The scars of war,
an inheritance of impossible agonies.
Neither victory nor defeat;
only enough graves to last them
for all time.
The ghosts of their children
drift as smoke across the never-ending sky.
As it’s been said,
any fool can make something complicated.
Even love for their fellow man.
Some sit on their star-spangled thrones,
while poets will write of a peace they
wish they had seen.
