Refuge

The bright red roof of the barn
peeks out from all the white,
an irresistible invitation to explore.
An eerie silence surrounds her,
as she hastens to its door.

Frozen grass crunching beneath her boots,
footprints marking her way.
Ice glistens like diamonds in the trees,
Snow packed in tight for a good long stay.

Once inside, the cold slowly melts away.
Fingers thaw out, feet begin to warm,
as she gratefully beds down in the hay.
A perfect place to steal a nap,
perhaps, the calm before the storm.

No one will find her here,
tucked away safe and sound.
A much-needed respite from
a life coming unbound.
